Applied Science
What is Applied Science?
The BTEC Applied Science course is equivalent to one A-Level qualification, and is designed to offer learners the chance to study key topics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology to a standard comparable to A-Level Sciences.
What will I study?
The course is composed of three mandatory units and one optional unit. Students will study: The Principles and Applications of Science; Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques, and will develop Scientific Investigative Skills in the three mandatory units, and will study one further optional unit in Biology, Chemistry or Physics in which they explore a specific topic in more depth.
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed using both internally assessed assignments and tasks, and externally assessed examinations.
Who should study Applied Science?
This course is designed for learners who are interested in learning about Sciences alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of Higher Education courses, not necessarily in Applied Science. The requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop the transferable and higher order skills which are valued by Higher Education providers and employers. For example, when studying Unit 3 (Science Investigation Skills), learners will develop skills including how to plan investigations, collecting, analysing, and presenting data and communicating results which support some of the skills learners need to progress to Higher Education, Employment, Self-Employment or Training.
